Beating Dental Anxiety as an Adult: It can be done!
For many adults, the thought of a dental visit can trigger feelings of anxiety or even fear. Whether it’s a fear of pain, past bad experiences, or just feeling out of control, dental anxiety is a very common challenge — and you’re not alone!
The good news? There are many ways to help ease your worries and make dental care manageable, including use of sedation options (if they are suitable) such as nitrous oxide or Penthrox. Working with your dentist to help over come your dental anxiety is important and we are here to help.
What Causes Dental Anxiety in Adults?
Dental anxiety can arise from various reasons:
- Fear of pain or needles
- Previous traumatic dental treatments
- Feelings of embarrassment or loss of control
- Sensory triggers like sounds and smells
Sometimes, anxiety can lead to avoiding dental visits — which unfortunately can worsen oral health issues and increase future anxiety.
How Can we Help you Manage Dental Anxiety?
1. Have Open Communication with Your Dentist
Talking openly about your fears allows our dental team to tailor your care and take things at a good pace for you. We will work with you to create a comfortable space for you.
2. Relaxation Techniques
Practising deep breathing, meditation, or listening to calming music during treatment can help reduce stress.
3. Sedation Options: Nitrous Oxide and Penthrox
When anxiety is significant, sedation can be a helpful tool (if suitable for you). We can discuss these options in detail at a consult visit with you and ensure they are a suitable option.
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. It helps you feel relaxed and calm during dental procedures. (Nitrous oxide is not suitable for everyone. Your dentist will review your medical history carefully to determine the safest option for you).
What Is Penthrox?
Penthrox (sometimes called the “green whistle”) is a self-administered inhaled analgesic used for short-term pain relief and anxiety management. (Penthrox is not suitable for everyone. Your dentist will review your medical history carefully to determine the safest option for you).
Other Supportive Measures that can be offered (depending on the treatment):
- Taking breaks during treatment
- Using topical numbing gels before injections
- Distraction techniques like watching videos or listening to music
The important thing to remember is that, dental anxiety doesn’t have to keep you from getting the care you need. With open communication, relaxation strategies, and sedation options like nitrous oxide and Penthrox, dental visits can become more manageable — and even stress-free.
