Why Flossing Became My Secret Weapon for a Healthy Smile

Flossing – Your Superpower!

We commonly hear that most people think flossing is just an optional extra, what we like to help them learn is that flossing isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s an essential part of keeping your mouth healthy. Here’s why flossing should be a regular part of your routine, and why it’s something everyone should take seriously.

Did you know?

Brushing only cleans about 60% of your tooth surfaces. That leaves around 40% of the surfaces, especially between the teeth and under the gumline, untouched by your toothbrush. This is where flossing steps in — reaching those tight spaces that brushing can’t. Even with how important flossing is around 60% of Australians do not floss regularly!

Plaque builds up on these hidden areas, and if left alone, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. This buildup is the leading cause of gum disease and tooth decay. Gum disease is actually the leading cause of tooth loss among Australian adults, and it starts quietly — often with bleeding or swollen gums that people tend to ignore. Flossing can help reduce this risk.

Uncomfortable, Awkward, Weird!

Some words we hear that describe flossing. However, today there are so many options for floss including floss water picks, interdental brushes and floss picks. They all avoid putting your hands in your mouth and using the old-style floss.

Regardless of what you’re using you should use gentle motions and being careful around the gums to avoid damage.

So for a floss-tabulous smile; although flossing might seem like a small step, remember it is your secret superpower! It should be a non-negotiable part of your daily routine. It’s a quick way to prevent problems before they start and keep your smile looking and feeling great.

If you’re not flossing yet, know you’re in the majority — but making this small change can make a huge difference. Your dentist and your gums will thank you! Oh and if you’re unsure how to brush or what to use, chat to us, we are more than happy to help you out and show you the way!
